Rochester to Welcome 3,000+ Athletes and Spectators First Weekend of May

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The weekend of May 6-8 is shaping up to be very busy for athletic competitions in the Rochester area. This weekend Rochester, NY will host the USA Gymnastics Level 9 Women's Eastern Championships, NCAA Men's Golf Regionals and the American Junior Golf Association 2022 Open Event. Visit Rochester expects these three events alone to bring more than 3,000 athletes and spectators to the Greater Rochester area.

In addition to these athletic events, the first weekend of May brings the opening weekend of the 124th edition of the Rochester Lilac Festival as well as the commencement ceremony and celebrations for Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). These events combined will bring thousands of visitors to Rochester.

“We are excited to see scores of visitors fill hotel rooms across Monroe County this upcoming weekend,” said Don Jeffries, President & CEO, Visit Rochester. “Whether coming to Rochester for the Rochester Lilac Festival, a university commencement or one of several sporting events occurring, visitors to Rochester leave behind a significant economic impact and spending. We look forward to welcoming visitors to Rochester all summer long, including during this upcoming busy weekend.”

Tourism is a major economic contributor for Rochester and Monroe County. Prior to the pandemic, the economic impact of tourism in Monroe County alone exceeded $1 billion annually, and the tourism and hospitality industry was responsible for 20,000 jobs. As the industry continues to recover from the impact of the pandemic, events like those taking place the first weekend of May play a significant role in the rebound of the industry and the Rochester community as a whole.
